From the Alton Democrat, March 4, 1938, Granville news:

Herman Kuester passed away at the Kuester farm home Sunday, Feb. 20, at 4:30 A.M. following a brief illness of one week. Mr. Kuester had not been in the best of health since he had a major operation in 1933. He was, however, able to carry the responsibilities of farm labor with the willing assistance of his wife and family. The flu and more serious complications caused his sudden death.

Mr. Kuester was born on May 17th, 1892 on the old home place one mile east of the Herman Kuester farm. He was the youngest of five children born to Mr. and Mrs. Chris. Kuester. On September 10th, 1920 he was joined in holy wedlock to Emma Koehlmoos. The couple started housekeeping on the present farm location where they enjoyed one another’s companionship and endeavored to rear wisely their family of four children.

The deceased is a member of the St. John’s Lutheran church at Germantown. He was an ex-service man and member of the American Legion Post of Granville.

He leaves to mourn his earthly departure his wife, four children, Marvin, Saverna, Wesley and Alice, three brothers, Theodore, Paul and Herman, and one sister, Freda.

Rev. Hartmeister of Paullina had charge of the funeral service Wednesday at 1:00 o’clock in the home and was assisted by the American Legion Post of Granville and Paullina in a military funeral service at the church. Pallbearers were: John Fesch, Wm. Pauling, Adolph Herman, Edwin Richter, Harold Richter and Ray Richter. A number of Granville people attended the funeral.
