From the Sioux Center News, February 24, 1938:

PETER H. VAN WYK SUCCUMBS AT HULL

Mr. Peter H. Van Wyk, who last week submitted to an operation for amputation of one of his legs, passed away Friday morning. His death was caused by arterial schlerosis, commonly known as hardening of the arteries. He was 66 years old.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, 1st Ref. church, Rev. Douwstra officiated. Mr. Van Wyk had been ailing for some time but was a patient at the hospital only a week. He seemed to rally after the operation for a short time, but later lost rapidly, and he passed away Friday morning Feb. 19th.

Peter Van Wyk was born in Nassau township Sioux County, south of Orange City, in a sod house on the prairie in 1872. In 1892 he married Bertha Marra, daughter of M. T. Marra, at Orange City. Ten children were born to this union, six of whom survive their father, besides his bereaved wife. They are W. J. Van Wyk of Sheldon, Mrs. G. Vander Gaarde, Hull, Mrs. J. A. Huibregtse of Matlock, Mr. J. P. Van Wyk of Hull, Mrs. H. J. Aberson, Rock Valley, and Rev. Herbert Van Wyk of Brandon, Wisconsin. There are fourtreen grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. J. Te Oaske [Te Paske] of Michigan arrived in Hull Sunday morning for the funeral.

Mr. Van Wyk had been an elder in the First Ref. Church for many years and was active in Sunday school work as well. For some time he had been town clerk, but resigned because of ill health. Hosts of friends extend sincere sympathy to the bereaved family.

P. H. VAN WYK, PROMINENT RETIRED FARMER, DIED FRIDAY

Peter Herbert Van Wyk, for years one of this community’s most prominent farmer and civic leader, passed away at the Hull Hospital, Friday, February 18th, from arterial schlerosis (hardening of the arteries). He was the youngest of a family of eight children born to Johanne and Nellie Van Wyk, and was born January 28, 1872 in a sod house in Nassau township, near Orange City.

On February 25, 1892, Mr. Van Wyk married Bertha Marra, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Marra, and to this union ten children were born. Besides the loving and faithful wife Mr. Van Wyk is survived by six children: W. T. Van Wyk of Sheldon; Mrs. George Vande Garde of Hull; Mrs. John A. Huibregtse of Matlock; John P. Van Wyk of Hull; Mrs. H. J. (Rev.) Aberson of Rock Valley; and Rev. H. S. Van Wyk of Brandon, Wisconsin; fourteen grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. John W. TePaske, of Three Oaks, Michigan.

Mr. Van Wyk was for many years an Elder and Sunday School teacher in the First Reformed Church of Hull.

The funeral was held Tuesday, February 22nd, at the home at 1:30 and from the First Reformed Church at 2:00 P.M., conducted by Rev. G. H. Douwstra. Interment was in Hope Cemetery, Hull, Iowa. The Index joins in extending sincere sympathy to the bereaved relatives.

Obituaries were also published in the Sioux County Capital (Feb. 24) and the Alton Democrat (Feb. 25, Hull news).

The Sioux County Capital obit adds that he was prominent in farming and its local cooperatives and was a very interested worker in all local government activities, including serving several years as Hull town clerk.

The Alton Democrat characterizes him as a valuable citizen of the community, a staunch friend, kind husband and father, who will be greatly missed by family and friends. A musical feature of his funeral services was a vocal solo, “The Prayer Perfect,” sung by Willis Brouwer. Pallbearers were members of the consistory.

His death certificate spells his surname Van Wyke; parents Johanes Van Wyke and Johanna Noteboom. both born in Holland; a farmer for 44 years, last worked at this occupation in 1920; resident of Hull for 20 years; died at 6:00 p.m., February 18, 1938; cause, pneumonia rt. lobar, onset 2/16/38, and amputation upper third left leg, performed 2/15/34, and arteritis.

His FindaGrave.com page gives his parents as Johannes Van Wyk (1820-1873) and Neeltje Noteboom Van Wyk (1828-1894). Seven siblings listed. Children Nellie Johanna (1893-1911), William Teunis (1895-1990), Dora Alberta (1896-1897), Dora Alberta Van Wyk Vande Garde (1898-1982), Johnie Peter (1900-1901), Florence Esther Van Wyk Huibregtse (1902-1985), John Peter (1904-1986), Effie Maria (1905-1906), Evva Van Wyk Aberson (1907-1999), and Herbert Samuel (1910-2005).
