Metta Margaretha Jantzen The following obituary was read by Rev. August Hein at the funeral services of Mrs. Herman Jantzen:Metta Margaretha Jantzen, nee Winter, was born on Dec . 1, 1873, in Sheridan township, Sioux county. Soon after her birth, her parents brought her to Jesus in Holy Baptism. When she was old enough to attend school she went to Pastor Hass' Christian School- She received confirmation instruction from Rev. W. Baetke, who had been called to this congregation in the year 1886. On the 25th of March she was confirmed. After her confirmation she remained in her parental home.
After that she worked for her uncle, Henry Lutjens, whose wife had passed away. In 18-9 she joined hands in holy matrimony with Mr. Herman Jantzen who survives' her and mourns the loss of a beloved wife. This union was blessed with four children, to wit: Robert and William Jantzen, Mrs. Herman Winter and Mrs. Carl Herbst, who mourn the loss of a faithful mother.
The deceased dwelled after her marriage on the old Habbinga farm north-west of our church, then she and her .family moved to the well known Wagner farm, hence to the John Jantzen farm, Mr. Jantzen being a brother of Herman Jantzen, and finally bought the 80-acre farm of Mr. H. Kammalade, where she lived for 31 years, nearly one half of her entire life.
In her younger years she enjoyed good health and it was her delight and joy to do her daily work faithfully. However, on Sundays she rested from all her work and went with her beloved ones to the house of God to hear God's word and thus revealed in her deeds to be a faithful member of St. John's congregation. She also joined the ladies aid and was an active member as long as her health permitted her to do so.
Three years ago her health failed and weakened her heart. A goiter had formed and so weakened her whole system. She was ill several times during his aforementioned span of time, but always recovered in a short time. However, in the early part of this year, the first of February, she took sick with pneumonia and since that time never regained her former strength. Visibly her strength ebbed away. Our departed sister, who undoubtedly felt the approaching end of her life, desired and received the Lord's Supper. This was on the 18th day of February. She wanted to be prepared for the last and bitter foe and strengthened her faith on receiving Christ's body and blood.
For a short while it appeared to all of us who came in contact with her as though she would recover, but the attacks returned and breathing became ever more difficult and the precarious condition of her heart gave rise for fear and anxiety and the best of care on the part of a registered nurse and the faithful nursing of her loved ones, especially by her daughter Edith, could not stay off the angel of death. On Tuesday morning at five o'clock she fell asleep calmly and quietly, reaching the age of 64 years, 6 months and 13 days. May she rest in peace.
She leaves to mourn her death, besides her immediate relatives and their families, nine grandchildren, and one brother and two sisters preceded her in death. Those who are still alive are the following: Mrs. Herman Hundt, Mr. Fred Winter, Mrs. George Mahler, Ellsworth, Minn; Mr. Henry Winter. Mrs. F. Drenko, Mr. Will A Winter, Mrs. Earnest Drenko, Mitchell. South Dakota; and Mrs. Floyd Diehl, California. The sum total of all relatives reaches the amazing figure of 168, upon who has come bereavement by her demise. May the God of all consolation comfort them with the Comfort of his Holy Ghost.
