His parents were Tjeerd Tjalke Roelofs Vander Meer and Pietertjs Hantjes Walda, He married Jeltje Roelofs ‘Julia’ Bijlsma 1830-1895. They had eight children. Theodore, Tryntje Robey, Nellie Riedesel, Roelof, Jantje, Daan, Lewis, and Sam.
