From the Alton Democrat, October 12, 1895:

A Terrible Accident.

Tuesday Dr. Smith was hastily summoned to the home of Henry Vollink, two miles south of Alton, to attend a son of Mr. Vollink, aged 11, who had been kicked by a horse. It seems the lad went into the stable when the horse was loose, and the noise made by the animal together with the screams of the lad, called the parents to the building. The boy was found lying unconscious, beneath the body of the animal. He was carried to the house and found that his skull had been crushed. Dr. Smith took from the awful wound eight pieces of bone and fully a spoonful of brains. At this writing the lad is very low and death may be expected any time, although there is one chance in a thousand that he will recover. The boy is well liked and popular with his playmates and it is sincerely to be hoped that death will not claim him.
