Joseph Edgar Hook was born on June 14, 1960, to Vincent and Lavonne (Kratochvil) Hook in Hawarden, Iowa. He was raised in Hawarden. Joe later moved to Perry, Iowa, where he graduated from Perry High School in 1978. He was united in marriage to Debbie Ball and they made their home in Minburn, Iowa. They had two children: Mindy and Andrew, along with Deb’s daughter, Melissa. They later divorced. Joe attended DMACC for an associate degree in microelectronics. Joe moved to Mesa, Arizona and then Payson, Arizona. Joe worked in construction and then operated a small electronics business while living in Arizona. In 1997, he moved back to Hawarden and began working at Coilcraft in Hawarden. On September 30, 2000, he was united in marriage to Doris Anne “Dodie” Elliott in Akron. They made their home in rural Akron. Joe then worked as a handyman for his own business, Joe's Handyman Service. Joe and Dodie then started and operated their own newspaper, The Akron Hometowner, which they still do today. Joe also owned and operated Koala-T Printing and his recent business, Joe's Repair, doing what he loved - repairing electronics, especially TVs.

Joe was very talented with electronics and enjoyed working with and repairing them. Joe truly enjoyed giving back and was very involved in his community. In Minburn he was on the volunteer fire department serving both as a firefighter and first responder. While living in Akron, he had been a volunteer EMT in Akron and Hawarden. He was a past Akron Lion's Club member, previous board member on the Akron Opera House Board, and past president and member of the Akron Area Chamber of Commerce. Joe also enjoyed golfing, taking care of their horses, watching professional football, especially the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints, Purdue University football and basketball (thanks to Dodie!), old country music, and westerns - especially John Wayne movies.

Joe is survived by his wife, Dodie Hook, Akron; daughter, Mindy (Josh) Rigler of Montana; grandchildren: Dustin, Haley, and Kendra Rigler; step-daughter, Melissa Bailey of Panora, Iowa, and her children: Kolby, Kurtis, McKennzie, and McKenna; his mother, Lavonne Hook of Hawarden; siblings: Lorri (Frank) Schuller, Shery (Lyle) Kaskie, and Michael (Shelda) Hook all of Hawarden, Dennis Hook of Hot Springs, South Dakota, Terry (Joni) Hook of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Pat (Jackie) Hook of Algonquin, Illinois; Foster mom, Linda Schumacher of Perry; siblings-in-law: Marge Elliott of Chicago, Illinois, and Bill (Kris) Elliott of Fishers, Indiana; many nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
