HAWARDEN, IOWA – Dennis Lowell Grage, 84, of Hawarden, passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2020 at his residence.

Memorial Service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 26, 2020 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, LCMS with Rev. Joshua Lowe officiating. Social distancing will be observed at the church. Burial of the cremated remains will be at a later date at the Hunter Cemetery in Hunter, North Dakota. The Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden is assisting the family.

Dennis was born on October 25, 1935 at Gardner, North Dakota, to parents Harry and Elvina (Johnson) Grage. He served with the US Army from 1954 to December of 1957.He attended college in Mayville, North Dakota and received a BS Degree in education. Dennis taught high school English for many years at West Sioux in Hawarden. He also taught at SECO in Hawarden. He had a close relationship with many of his students, some of them even saying “He was the best teacher they ever had.” Dennis also loved directing the school plays.

After leaving teaching, he was an over-the-road driver for Heyl Truck Lines in Akron, Iowa for many years.

Dennis loved his Minnesota Twins and never missed a game. He loved reading almost anything, but he especially loved Shakespeare. He also loved bird watching, and he had a set-up around his apartment. He really enjoyed the hummingbirds. Dennis enjoyed gardening, and after retiring he grew many flowers around his apartment.

Dennis leaves behind three daughters, June Ende of Yankton, South Dakota, Rhonda Huls of Hawarden, and Gail (Dave) Dierks of Hanlontown, Iowa; and two sons, David (Teri) Grage of Buffalo, Minnesota and Nathan Grage of Hawarden; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Elvina; two brothers, Donald and Darrell; and a sister, Delores (Dolly) Winger.
