Mr. Paul Van Wechel, age 78, of Orange City, passed away on Thursday, May 28, 2020, at the Orange City Area Health System.

There will be a funeral service on Saturday, May 30, at 1:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. The Rev. Robert De Boer will officiate. A private family interment will take place at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City at a later date. Visitation without the family will be on Saturday, from 10:00am to 11:00am, at the funeral home.

Paul Douglas was born on November 14, 1941, in Orange City, the son of Kenneth and Gwendolyn (Den Beste) Van Wechel. He was raised in Orange City and graduated from the Maurice–Orange City High School.

After high school, Paul worked at his father’s grocery store until enlisting in the United States Army, serving during the Vietnam War. Following his honorable discharge in 1965, he moved to Cherokee, where he worked at Cherokee Cold Storage for several years. He spent the majority of his life working as a painter in Cherokee, and later in Orange City. In 2017, Paul moved to the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City, and in 2019, he became a resident of the Happy Siesta Care Center in Remsen.

Mr. Van Wechel was currently a member of Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City.

Paul was an avid fan of the Northwestern College Red Raiders, especially the football, basketball, and volleyball teams, and liked watching their games. In earlier years he enjoyed bowling, playing softball, and fishing.

Survivors include his sister, Mary Sandbulte, of Sioux Center; a sister-in-law, Shirley Van Wechel, of Orange City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, David Van Wechel.
