Hawarden Independent of Jan 18th, 1945

Mrs. Henrietta Torwelle passed away at her home here on Friday Jan 5, at 4:20 a.m. following several moths sickness due to her advanced years. She was born at Neuenkirchen, Germany on Jan 18, 1862, and attained the age of 82 years, 11 months and 13 days.

She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Leeker of Germany. At 20 years of age she came to America and came directly to Sioux County, where she was employed. On February 20 1886, she was united in marriage to Henry Torwelle in Reading township, Sioux County. Following their marriage the couple farmed in and around Ireton retiring from active farm life and moving to Ireton in 1913.

Eight children were born to this union, of whom four remain. The are Mrs. Walter Hoogland of Rock Rapids, Wm. Torwelle of Hawarden, Mrs. Robert Greigg of Sioux City and Carl Torwelle of Ireton. Mr. Torwelle preceded his wife in death on Feb. 2, 1927. The following children also precede their mother in death, Carl, Henry, August, and Otto. There are also eighteen grandchildren and six great Grandchildren.

She was the last member of her family of three brothers and sisters to pass from this life. Mrs. Louise Johnson of Hawarden is a niece of the deceased. Mrs. Torwelle was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in her young girlhood and remained loyal and faithful to her church. She was in constant attendance upon its services until ill health prevented.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 1:30 at the home and 2:00 at the St. Paul’s Lutheran church, Rev. H. W. Kreiger officiating. Interment was in Pleasant Hill cemetery in the family burial plot
