The Hawarden Independent of May 31, 1923

Mrs. W. I. Thompson Called by Death. Mrs. W. I. Thompson for more than thirty nice years a resident of the Ireton community passed away at her home in Ireton about 7:30 Monday morning following an immediate illness of less than a month’s duration during the last two weeks of which she was bedfast. Her death was due to hardening of the arteries and was not unexpected. Her health began to fail more than a year ago although she was never robust, but until recently she was able to attend her household duties.

Ellen Howard was a daughter of Neucomis? and Malinda Howard. She was born at Lena Ill, Jan 18, 1857, and died in Ireton May 28, 1923 at the age of 66 years, 4 months and 10 days. She was one of a family of four children. Her girlhood and young womanhood was spent in Stephenson and Jo Daviess counties IL, near her birthplace. On Sept 13, 1882 she was untied in marriage with W. I. Thompson at Lena, IL, and in March 1884 they located on a farm four miles north of Ireton where they resided for ten years, moving to Ireton in February, 1891, and they have ever since made their home here.

No children were ever born to them. Besides the sorrowing husband her death is mourned by one brother and on sister, John W. Howard and Mrs. F. Farmner?, both of Ireton and by countless friends. One sister preceded her to the Great Beyond.
During her years in Ireton she formed many lasting friendships. She was highly esteemed as a neighbor and friend and was regarded as a splendid Christian lady. (article goes on to describe her attributes)

The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved relatives in their sad loss.
Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock at the Presbyterian church, with Rev. Otto L. Carr, the pastor in charge and Rev. J. A. Kettle pastor of the M. E. church, preaching the funeral sermon. Interment was made in Pleasant Hill cemetery. Out of town relatives here for the funeral were Mr. Thompson’s sister Mrs. C. M. Tinkham of Independence MO, and her son Milo Tinkham of Kansas City Mo.
