Nina Bolkema, age 92, of Sheldon, Iowa passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2020 at her son’s home in Sheldon.
A private burial with family will be Monday, April 6, 2020 at East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon.
Nina Leona Bolkema was born on April 28, 1927 in Rock Valley, Iowa. She was the daughter of John and Henrietta (Vande Vegte) Vanden Bosch. She lived her youth in Rock Valley where she attended the Rock Valley Christian Grade School. She attended high school at Western Christian in Hull, Iowa, where she graduated in 1944. Nina worked as a bookkeeper at Valley State Bank in Rock Valley for 4 ˝ years.
She was united in marriage to Marvin Bolkema of Rock Valley on January 12, 1949 in Rock Valley. They lived in Rock Valley, Hawarden and Inwood, Iowa, before moving to Ocheyedan, Iowa, where they farmed. Nina worked tirelessly side-by-side with her husband on the farm while raising their five children and caring for their home. In 1993, they moved to Sheldon, Iowa. Marvin passed away on February 19, 2011. Nina moved to the Christian Retirement Home and enjoyed living there. The Christian Retirement Home family became very dear to her.
She was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon.
Nina enjoyed visits, activities and playing games with her family. She loved going to grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s programs and sports activities, and extended family gatherings. She was involved in various church societies. She was a volunteer at the Village Northwest Treasure Chest for over 4000 hours. She was an instructor for Crossroad Bible Studies for over 15 years and faithfully attended Coffee Break Bible Study. Always spry, Nina, walked hundreds of miles around Sheldon. She never missed sending a card and letter for each birthday and anniversary of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Nina passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2020 at her son’s home in Sheldon at the age of 92 years and 11˝ months.
Those left to cherish her memories are her children, Harlan and Yvonne Bolkema of Sheldon, IA and their children, Kerry (Rodney, deceased) Lamfers of Sioux Falls, SD and their children, Ashley, Emma and Claire; Brian and Katherine Bolkema of Winnipeg, MB and their children, Mikayla and Caden; Lisa and Nathan Tintle of Sioux Center, IA and their children, Dorian, Levi and Mason; Heidi and Jackson Suah of Sioux Center, IA and their children, Aniah, Eden and Adria De Kruyf; Judy and Dave Nunnikhoven of Newton, IA and their children, Eric and Trisha Nunnikhoven of Newton, IA and their children, Sydney, Logan, Carter, and Allison; Holli and Matt Zieske of Sartell, MN and their children, Caleb, Megan, Willem, and Brenna; Mark Nunnikhoven of St. John, IN and his daughter, Nora; James “Jim” and Lavonne Bolkema of Sioux Center, IA and their children, Janelle and Tyler Van Der Zwaag of Sheldon, IA and their children, Karson and Jaxton; Nathan and Jayci Bolkema of Ankeny, IA; Myron and Chantelle Bolkema of Oostburg, WI and their children, Anthony and Kim Bolkema of South Holland, IL and their children, Lucas, Nolan and Brycen; Elise and Craig Holstein of Port Washington, WI and their children, Nadia and Alek; Julia and Peter Keep of South Holland, IL and their daughter, Layla; Lyle and Brenda Bolkema of Sheldon, IA and their children, Justin and Katie Bolkema of Morton, IL; Breanna Bolkema of LaCrosse, WI; Courtney Bolkema of Sheldon, IA; two brothers, Leonard Vanden Bosch of Rock Valley, IA and Marvin Vanden Bosch of Rock Valley, IA; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, John and Betty Bolkema of Hull, IA, Norm and Bess Bolkema of Phoenix, AZ, Hilbert Vande Kamp of Sanborn, IA and Elaine Bolkema of Rock Valley, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents; parents-in-law, John and Winnie Bolkema; sister, Loraine Vande Kamp; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Geneva Vanden Bosch, Nel Vanden Bosch, Ken and Lucy Bolkema, Leroy Bolkema, Leonard Bolkema, Jo and Arvid Van Gelderen, Lucille and Henry Veltkamp, Bernice Bolkema; grandson-in-law, Rodney Lamfers.
Nina would have desired nothing more than to have all her loved ones together to celebrate her life, but that will have to happen at a later time.GRAVESIDE SERVICE
