MRS. FRANK DE HAAN SUCCUMBS FROM HEART ATTACK

Death came to Mrs. Frank DeHaan of Orange City at about 12 o'clock Monday night, when she was stricken with a heart attack. She had been suffering from diabetes for quite some time and subject to heart attacks before. She would have passed her 71st birthday October 7th.

Deceased was born in the Netherlands in 1866 and came to this country as a small child with her parents. She was married fifty three years ago in July to Frank De Haan at Alton, and they made their home for many years on a farm near Alton. Retiring from the farm in 1917, they made their home in Orange City since then. Eight children were born to them, one son Albert preceding his mother in death in 1929. One child died in infancy. The survivors are her husband, four daughters, Mrs. Arie Bogaard of Sheldon, Mrs. Joe Bloemendahl of Orange City, Mrs. P. H. Van Horsen of Portland, Oregon [yes, only three were listed], and three sons, Henry and John of Orange City, and Frank of Sioux Center, and seventeen grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held on Friday afternoon at 1:30 from the residence and 2:00 from the First Ref. Church with Rev. Colenbrander officiating. Interment will take place in the Orange City Cemetery.

MRS. FRANK DE HAAN PASSES

Funeral services for the late Mrs. Frank De Haan will be held Friday afternoon at her home and at the First Reformed church, with the pastor, Rev. H. Colenbrander, officiating. Mrs. Frank De Haan, long-time respected Sioux county citizen, passed away suddenly following a heart attack at 12:15 A.M. at her home Tuesday morning.

Mrs. De Haan (nee Margarita De Gooyer) was born in Apeldoorn, The Netherlands, in 1866 and was united in marriage to Frank De Haan, who survives her, on a farm near Alton, Ia., the present Joe Bloemendaal farm, in 1884. They had been married 53 years on July 1, last. The couple resided on different farms but the past twenty years had lived in town.

Mrs. De Haan leaves to mourn her departure her husband and six children who are as follows: Gertrude, Mrs. A. D. Bogaard, Hospers; Annette, Mrs. Joe Bloemendaal, Orange City; Mary, Mrs. P. H. Van Horsen, Portland, Oregon; John De Haan, deputy clerk of courts, Orange City; and Dr. F. D. De Haan, Sioux Center. [Henry was not mentioned.] One child died in infancy and four years ago a son, Albert De Haan, age 28 years, passed away. Sixteen grandchildren and one great grandchild also survive.

Mrs. Frank De Haan died at her home in Orange City October 5. She was born Margaretta DeGooyer in Appaldoorn, The Netherlands, Oct. 26, 1866 and came to this country when she was six. She was united in marriage to Frank De Haan, July 1, 1884.

Mrs. De Haan is survived by her husband and six children who are: Mrs. Arie D. Bogaard of Sheldon; Mrs. P. H. Van Horsen of Portland, Oregon; Dr. Frank J. De Haan of Sioux Center; Mrs. Joe Bloemendaal, Henry De Haan and John De Haan all of Orange City. Two children preceded her in death, Albert Frank in 1928 and a child who died in infancy. She also leaves one brother Henry De Gooyer of Orange City, and three sisters, Mrs. Nancy Ver Hoef of Boyden and Mrs. Bert Bomgaars and Mrs. Hattie Pas of Orange City. RESEARCH NOTES

Her death certificate has her as Margaretta De Haan. and adds her father, John De Gooyer (mother’s name unknown to the informant, J. W. De Haan); died at 12:30 a.m. October 5, 1937; cause, “coronary disease thrombosis”; contributory cause, “diabetes m.”

The Sioux County Cemetery Index also has her as Margaretta De Haan, buried in West Lawn Cemetery, Orange City. FindaGrave.com includes a photo of the joint headstone of her and her husband Frank, with her name spelled Margaret. It gives her parents as Jan De Gooyer (1825-1882) and Angenieta Willemsen Kuyper (1837-1901), and lists five siblings.

WieWasWie.nl has a birth index entry for Margrietha de Gooijer, born 27 Oct 1866 in Beekbergen (Apeldoorn), Arnhem, Gelderland; parents Jan de Gooijer (40), a farmer, and Angenietha Willemsen (30).

The Orange City Dutch Reformed Church membership register on Ancestry.com has a family list for Frank De Haan and Margaretha De Goyer, with children Gertie Aaltje (born April 2, 1887), Annette Neeltje (born July 14, 1889), Marie Bertha (born Feb. 21, 1892), Henry Jan (born Jan. 27, 1894), John Willem (born July 3, 1896), Albert Frank (born Jan. 18, 1899), and Frank James (born March 28, 1902).
