Joe Vredeveld moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan with his family in 1924. He and his brother Henry did not find the furniture factory life to their liking and they decided to move back to Iowa and make it in farming. Joe returned and found his livelihood in farming, Henry became discouraged and travel back to Grand Rapids. Joe was the only son of eight that made a living by farming. Henry later bought two farms in Michigan, but learned the furniture upholstery trade to make his main livelihood.

Joe married Bernice Smits on November 24, 1936 at Rock Valley. They farmed near Rock Valley, then later farmed near Rock Rapids where they later retired. Joe passed away at the George Good Samaritan Center on August 25, 1984 at the age of 78, 10 months and 23 days. Joe was also the only son to retain the original Dutch spelling of his last name. All the other brothers and families changed the name to Vredevelt.

Joe leavesto cherish his memories: three children: Carol Ann Bryant of National City, California; Betty (Mrs. Herbert Feldman) of George, Iowa, and Ronald Vredeveld of Omaha Nebraska; ten grand children; one great-grandchild.
