From the Alton Democrat, April 16, 1937:

Youth Passes Away Following Illness

John M. Dykstra, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Dykstra, passed away at the home of his parents at about four o’clock Friday morning after much suffering and pain. John became ill several months ago and was then examined by several specialists who diagnosed his case as cancer. After ten days treatments he seemed to be getting along well. About ten days ago he again became seriously ill and passed away that morning.

He was born on a farm near Le Mars where he lived until his parents moved to the small farm west of Orange City. He attended the public school and later assisted his father on the farm. On March 13, he observed his nineteenth birthday. He is survived by his parents and one sister, Elizabeth, and a host of friends who also mourn his passing.

Funeral services were held at the First Reformed church Monday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock with the services in charge of Rev. Colenbrander, assisted by Rev. Nattress of the American Reformed church. Burial was made at the local cemetery. John became a member of the First Reformed church Easter Sunday although he was unable to be at the service.
