Benjamin Van Zanten, 35, died at the University Hospital, September 7. He had under gone an operation for a heart ailment but the operation had not been completed. However, he seemed to be doing well and was up and around. His wife, who had been visiting him, returned to her home Thursday morning at one o’clock. At two o’clock a call came from the hospital that his condition had worsened. Two cars left at three o’clock that same morning for Iowa City but they arrived there just five minutes after he had passed away. In one of the cars were Mr. and Mrs. Ed Grotenhuis and Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit Vander Schaaf and in the other, Jim Cleveringa, Mrs. Don Raak, Mrs. Edward Fisher and Mrs. Van Zanten and son. Death was due to a ruptured artery.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the home and in the Presbyterian Church at Hospers. Reverend Eddink officiated. Burial was in the Newkirk Cemetery under the direction of A.D. Van Etten.

Survivors besides his wife and son, Barry, are his parents, Dr. and Mrs. William Van Zanten and a sister, Mrs. Eilleen Meenks of Brighton and two brothers, Gerrit of Arizona and Roger of Oregon. His wife is the former Joyce Vander Schaaf of Hospers whom he married in 1944.
