Jay H. Crowder Of Elk Point Succumbs

Jay H. Crowder, 44, prominent farmer and airport manager of Elk Point, died Tuesday, January 26. He had been ill about five weeks. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church at Elk Point last Friday afternoon

Survivors are his widow; a daughter Joan, and three sons, Jerry, Roy and Jimmy. These children are grandchildren of Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Callan of Hawarden. Other survivors are three brothers, Dr. Roy Crowder in the navy at San Diego, Calif., and Earl and Robert Crowder of Washington state, and a step-daughter, Donna.

His first wife was Helen Callan (1906-1937). Their marriage certificate (Ancestry.com) has groom James H. Crowder, age 25, resident of Elk Point, S. Dak., a farmer, born in Elk Point, parents R. M. Crowder and Maude Hershey; bride Helen Callan, age 22, resident of Hawarden, born at Hawarden, parents Michael Callan and Catherine Burke; married at Hawarden April 14, 1928. The 1940 census for Elk Point, Union County, South Dakota has Jay H. Crowder, age 36, widowed, born in South Dakota, education college second year, a farmer; children Gerald (11), Roy (9), Joan (7), and James (6), all born in Iowa; housekeeper Florence Molvig, age 25, divorced, and her daughter Donna (7).

The index entry on Ancestry.com for the 1945 South Dakota state census has Jay H. Crowder, age 41, born 1904 in Elk Point, S.D., resident of Elk Point, married 1941, spouse Florence Davis. No record of their marriage was found on Ancestry.com.
