Gertrude Buyert was born January 24, 1927 in Sioux Center, IA, the daughter of Nick and Hermina (Kempers) Buyert. Gertrude grew up on the family farm and attended Welcome Township #4 country school near Carmel, IA through the 5th grade, and Sioux Center Christian School for 6th-8th grades. She did housekeeping work as a young adult. On August 30, 1950, she was united in marriage to James “Jim” Intveld. When Jim was drafted into the United States Army in 1951, Gert traveled with him while he served stateside for two years during the Korean War. In 1953, they settled onto their farm southeast of Rock Rapids, IA, and farmed for 43 years before retiring to Rock Rapids in 1995. In retirement, they enjoyed traveling throughout the US on bus tours together. Gert also spent time riding with Jim on his delivery routes for Lewis Family Drug. In May of 2016, they moved to Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City, IA and in October of 2016, they moved to the Good Samaritan Society in George, IA. Jim passed away June 15, 2018 after more than 67 years of marriage.

Gert was a member and faithful attendee of the First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids, where she sang in the choir. She greatly enjoyed working side by side with Jim on the farm – anything he did, she did, too. They had a deep love for one another and were inseparable. Gert was devoted to reading scripture aloud to the family after each meal. She was a master crocheter and taught all her daughters to sew and cook; she enjoyed playing cards and hosting card parties, doing word search puzzles, eating popcorn, watching Twins baseball, and especially holding hands with Jim. This past Friday evening, Gert died at the Sanford Hospice Ava’s House in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 93.
