From the Sioux County Capital, January 14, 1937:

HERMAN VER HOEF

Herman Ver Hoef, 77, of Boyden, died Wednesday morning at 7:30 o’clock after a lingering illness. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at Boyden at 1 o’clock in the home and in the First Reformed church there at 1:30. Rev. Brink will conduct the services and burial will be made in the Sanborn cemetery.

Mr. Ver Hoef was born in Pella, Marion county, Iowa. Fifty-five years ago he was united in marriage to Miss Nancy De Gooyer who survives him. Also surviving are the following children: Walter and James of Sanborn; Anna, Mrs. Albert Dethmer; Carrie, Mrs. Pete Herwynen; Nellie, Mrs. John Cassemier; Jennie, Mrs. Ike Struyk all of Boyden; John of Forest City; and Will of Rock Rapids. Also these brothers and sisters: John of Orange City; Cornelius of Sheldon; Jim, Mrs. Dick De Velder and Mrs. Ed Diekevers all of Boyden.

From the Alton Democrat, January 22, 1937, Boyden news:

Mr. Herman Ver Hoef passed away January 13, 1937 at his home in Boyden at the age of 77 years. He was married to Nancy De Gooyer, Dec. 29, 1881. To this union were born 11 children, eight of which are still living. Eight children, twenty grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren are left to mourn his death. The children are: Walt Ver Hoef and James Ver Hoef of Sanborn; John Ver Hoef of Forest City; Bill Ver Hoef of Rock Rapids; Mrs. Albert Dethmers, Mrs. John Casemier, Mrs. Arie Struyk and Mrs. Peter Herwynen of Boyden. He also leaves to mourn his death three brothers: Case of Sheldon, John of Orange City and James of Boyden and two sisters: Mrs. Dick De Velder and Mrs. Ed Diekevers of Boyden. Mr. Ver Hoef had been ailing quite some time with cancer and died Wednesday morning at 7:30 o’clock. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at one o’clock at the house and one-thirty at the First Reformed church of Boyden. Interment was made at the Sanborn cemetery.

Sioux County Pioneer Is Dead

A brief note on his death and places and times of funeral services, accompanied by a photo of him.

[An obituary, similar to those above, was published in the January 21, Reporter, but the text is badly broken up. The only added information is his birth date, September 23, 1859 at Pella.]

His death certificate adds his parents, Walter Ver Hoef and Tenna Klien [probably Klein], both born in the Netherlands; died January 13, 1937 of carcinoma of the liver, onset August 1936; contributory cause, senility, onset 1935.

His FindaGrave.com page shows him buried in Roseland Cemetery, Sanborn. It lists his spouse – Nancy De Gooyer Ver Hoef (1862-1941, married 1881) – and seven of his children.
