DEATH CALLS FORMER SIOUX CENTER RESIDENT
Remains Buried at Luctor, Kansas

Mrs. C. Colsman, former well-known resident here, died at the Sheldon hospital, Jan. 6, following a long sickness. The funeral services were held at Hospers on Jan. 9, and the remains, accompanied by the children, were taken to Luctor, Kas., to be interred in the family burial plot beside those of her husband who died a number of years ago. Deceased is survived by several children including Mrs. Ben Bierma, Sioux Center; J. Coleman[Colsman], Sheldon; Mrs. John Prins, Sanborn; Richard Colsman, Redlands, Calif.; Otto and Conrad Colsman of Denver, Colo.; Mrs. B. Gesink and Mrs. C. Gesink, Sioux Center.

Deceased was born in Holland and came to Orange City where on Feb. 14, 1884, she was united in marriage with C. Colsman. They moved to Luctor, Kansas, where they farmed for a number of years and Mrs. Colsman remained until the death of her husband. She then came to Sioux Center with two of her daughters and lived here until the daughters married, when she discontinued housekeeping and made her home with her children. All of the children except Mrs. C. Gesink and Mrs. Bert Gesink accompanied the remains of their mother to Kansas and Mrs. Bierma returned to her home here last week.

Her FindaGrave.com page gives her name as Berendje Brands Colsman; born 4 Feb 1859 in Kampen Municipality, Overijssel, Netherlands; died 6 January 1939 in Sheldon; buried in Luctor Cemetery, Prairie View, Philips County, Kansas; spouse Jacob Conrad Colsman (1863-1913, married 1884); four of their children are listed.

Her death certificate gives her name as Bernadine Colsman, widow of Jacob C., resident of Hospers, Iowa, and adds her parents, John Brandts and [no forename] Hardloper, both born in the Netherlands; died at 2:20 a.m. January 6, 1939; cause, pneumonia; contributory causes, senility, arteriosclerosis, and chronic bronchitis.

The 1900 U.S. census shows J. C. (age 36) and B. (age 41) Colsman, married 15 years and with 8 children, farming in Long Island Township, Phillips County, Kansas. He immigrated in 1884 and is naturalized; she immigrated in 1881.
