A number of Boyden relatives and friends attended the funeral services, held at Matlock on Monday afternoon, for Earl Kammlade. Mr. Kammlade died Friday in his home in the Cornelius Apartments at Sioux City, following a heart attack.

EARL KAMMALADE

Burial services for Earl Kammalade of Sioux City were held in Matlock on Monday. He was raised on a farm between Matlock and Boyden. He is survived by his wife, his mother Mrs. Viola Kammalade and brother Don of Matlock, two sisters Mrs. Phil Heading and Mrs. Jack Schroeder also of Matlock.

FindaGrave.com gives his full name as Earl Fernando Kammlade; his parents as George J. Kammlade (1862-1928) and Frances Ophelia Nugent Kammlade (1864-1900); his wife as Laura May Kellogg Kammlade (1883-1948). There are photos of two headstones, a moss-covered standing stone that looks like his military headstone, and a flat one; both give his name as simply Earl Kammlade.

His death certificate gives his residence as 825 4th Street, Sioux City, resident of the city four years; occupation, laborer; wife Mrs. Laura Kammlade; born August 16, 1886 in Matlock; parents George Kammlade, born in Pennsylvania, and Frances Nugent, born in Wisconsin; died at 1 a.m. January 8, 1937; cause, coronary occlusion, onset January 6, 1937.

U.S. Headstone Applications for Military Veterans on Ancestry.com has Earl F. Kammlade; enlisted September 21, 1917, discharged January 14, 1919; sergeant, Company 12, 123rd Depot Brigade; buried at the Matlock Cemetery, Matlock, Iowa (originally said Camp Pike, Little Rock, Arkansas, crossed out); applied for by Mrs. Earl Kammlade, Huron, South Dakota on March 11, 1939; shipped to Don Kammlade at Matlock.

In the 1930 U.S. census, Earl Kammlade (43) and wife Laura M. (45) are living in Summit Township, O’Brien County, where he is a farmer. He was 38 and she was 40 when they married.

Their marriage certificate shows groom Earl F. Kammalade, age next birthday 40, resident of Matlock, a farmer, born in Matlock, parents George Kammalade and Frances Viola Nugent, first marriage; bride Laura May Spencer, maiden name Laura May Kellogg, age next birthday 40, resident of Sanborn, born at Boscobel, Wisconsin, parents George Kellogg and Henrietta Gress, third marriage; married at Orange City, Iowa, October 2, 1925.

His World War I draft registration card (June 1917) shows him as a self-employed farmer at Boyden, Iowa; age 30, born August 16, 1886 in Matlock; single; claims exemption from the draft because it is necessary to take care of his crops; medium height, stout build, blue eyes, black hair.
