From the Sioux Center News, December 31, 1936:

WIFE FOLLOWS HUSBAND IN DEATH

Mrs. Jost VerDoorn passed away in Rock Valley on Thurs. eve., Dec. 24th and was buried on Monday, exactly three weeks to the day after the funeral of her husband Jost VerDoorn. Mrs. VerDoorn had been ailing for some time, but after the death of her husband her strength failed rapidly. The day before Christmas she became seriously ill and never recovered. 10 children survive, four girls and six boys, all of whom are married. The funeral was held In Rock Valley Monday, with Roland Wikert In charge of funeral arrangements.

From the Sioux County Capital, January 7, 1937:

Mrs. Elsie Ver Doorn died at her home in Rock Valley, Thursday, Dec. 24. Mrs. Ver Doorn became very ill on Dec. 23, and lived only until the following day. Her husband Jost Ver Doorn preceded her in death just three weeks to the day of her death.

Mrs. Ver Doorn was born in the Netherlands on Sept. 13, 1865. On Nov. 21, 1883 she was united in marriage with Jost Ver Doorn. Five years later, Mr. and Mrs. Ver Doorn came to the United States and made their home near Middleburg. Later they moved to a farm near Rock Valley where they lived until 1913, when they moved to their own home in Rock Valley. Mrs. Ver Doorn has been a resident of Rock Valley since that time.

Mrs. Ver Doorn is survived by ten children, six sons, who are Joe jr., Tom and Dick of Rock Valley, Martin and Neale of Ashton, Ia., and William of Edgerton, and four daughters who are Mrs. Henry Van Woudenburg of Inwood, Mrs. Harry De Groot of Doon, Mrs. Arie Gaalswyk and Mrs. Bert Bliek of Rock Valley.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ver Doorn were held in the First Reformed church Monday afternoon, Dec. 28. Rev. H. J. Aberson was in charge of the services. Clarence Mulder, Mrs. Ace Bonthuis, Dick Roelofs, and Mrs. Jake Vander Weerd sang a beautiful quartet. Burial took place at the Valley View cemetery.

Her death certificate has her as Elsie Verdoorn, widow of Joost Verdoorn; born Sept. 13, 1865 in the Netherlands; parents Joost Int Veldt and Teuntje Int Veld; informant Joe Verdoorn, Rock Valley; died in Rock Valley at 8:00 p.m. December 24, 1936; cause, coronary thrombosis, onset Dec. 22, 1936.

Her FindaGrave.com page gives her name as Elsjen Intvelt Verdoorn, born at Haarlemmermeer, Noord-Holland, Netherlands; spouse Joost Verdoorn (1860-1936, married 1883); lists ten of her children; includes a photo of her headstone, which shows her forename as Elsje.

The 1900 U.S. census shows the family renting a farm in Sioux Township, Sioux County: Joseph Verdoorn (40), born Feb. 1860, immigrated 1888, naturalized, married 17 years; wife Elsie (35), born Sept. 1864, mother of 10 children, 10 living, immigrated 1888; children Anna (16), Joseph (14), Richard (13), and Thomas (12), all born in Holland, immigrated 1888, and Teunnie (11), Mary (10), Martin (8), Cornelius (7), Bertha (8), and William (1), all born in Iowa. Subsequent census records and marriage records for her children refer to her as Elsie.

A marriage index record on WieWasWie.nl has groom Joots Verdoorn, age 23, a laborer, born at Heesbeen, parents Dirk Verdoorn, a farmer, and Anneke van Helden; bride Elsje Intveld, age 18, born at Haarlemmermeer, parents Joost Intveld, a farmer, and Teuntje van Wijk; married in Haarlemmermeer, Noord-Holland 21 November 1883.
