Hull Index of July 16, 1909
Mr. John Fred Schmidt son of John Peter Schmidt and his wife Mary, was born the 13th day of June 19, 1850 at Beijedorf, Hanover, Germany and where he was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran Church.

He lived at Beijedort till he came to America. On his birthday, in the years 1872 he was married to Miss Anna Sophia Ahlf To them were born six children one of which a son died at sea when they were on their way to this country near New York. ‘
They came to America in the spring of 1883 and made their home on a farm in Sheridan township Sioux County Iowa, where they have remained up to the present time.
Soon after coming here, Mr. Schmidt became a member of the German Evangelical Lutheran St. Paul’s congregation and was always a true member of his church.
In the last few years he has suffered a great deal with headache, seemingly caused by catarrk? Last September he began to suffer more intensely cancer of the stomach making its appearance. Last January he suffered the operation of having his stomach pumped out a number of times, receiving no relief. In March the doctors in Sioux City began an operation but after getting to the stomach decided that the cancer was incurable. The next month he went to Kansas City to see a cancer specialist, Dr. Johnson, who declared after an examination that his case was a severe and doubtful one.
Dr. Johnson treated him for six weeks at the hospital and then sent him home where the treatment was kept up for a long time but with no beneficial results, he becoming weaker all the time. At times his pain was almost unbearable. On the first of July our brother took the Lord’s supper and became strengthened in his faith for the long voyage. His last bones were by the grace of Christ more quiet and he passed away calmly and without showing signs of pain. The 10th of July at 1:30 p.m. his age being 59 years and 10 days.
He leaves a wife and five children, William; Mrs. Anna Guetz, Mrs. Mary Schlumbohm; Henry and Mrs. Kate Hollander to mourn the loss of a true husband and father. The church loses a good member and fried, and our country an honest, peace loving citizen. The lord bless his memory to all of us. But to this soul may Christ give eternal peace in the house of the children of God! Rev Paul J. Bunge.
