Dick Hoogland age 94 of Sioux Center, Iowa died Friday, January 17, 2020 at Sioux Center Health Center.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 21st from 4-7PM, with the family present from 5-7PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

A prayer service for family and friends will be held on Wednesday at 10:00AM, January 22nd at the Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center. Interment will follow the prayer service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday at 11:00AM, January 22nd at the Bethel Christian Reformed Church with Rev. John Lee officiating.

Dick Hoogland was born January 5, 1926, to Lammert and Kate (Bosch) Hoogland in Orange City, Iowa. He attended Sioux Center Christian School through the eighth grade.

In January of 1951, Dick enlisted in the United States Army. He served during the Korean Conflict. On July 6, 1951, Dick was married to Joann Krommendyk in Ireton, Iowa.

He worked for Mutual Telephone Company for three years before working for Plaizer Plumbing and Heating for 6 ½ years. In 1963, Dick started Hoogland Plumbing & Heating and became and independent plumber in Sioux Center serving until he retired in 1995. After retirement he worked for Walstra Plumbing and Heating and did deliveries for Casey’s Bakery.

Dick was a member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center where he served as a Deacon. He and Joann were also members of the Mr. and Mrs. Society. Dick was also a board member of the Sioux Center Christian School. He was a member of the American Legion.

In his free time, he enjoyed traveling, camping, hunting and fishing with his family. He also liked to bowl and took part in a bowling league. He was also a great supporter or Dordt College and Western Christian sporting events.

On June 29, 2014, Dick’s wife of 62 years, Joann died. Dick remained living in their home and stayed active with visits with his neighbors over a cup of coffee. In March of 2018, Dick moved into Franken Manor and later made his residence at Royale Meadows Care Center in October of 2019.

He is survived by his six children: Shirley and Rick Van Waardhuizen of Elwood, NE; David and Ruth Hoogland of Sanborn, IA; Diane and Phil Grom of Rock Valley, Iowa, Jay and Laurie Hoogland of Sioux City, IA, Leon and Faye Hoogland of Grandville, MI and Russel and Melinda Hoogland of Sioux City, IA; 19 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Melvin Brands of Sheldon, IA.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Joann; two brothers and sisters-in-law: John and Tracy Hoogland and Alfred and Ethel Hoogland; two sisters: Bertha and Gerrit Brands and Alice Brands.
