Died: January 16, 1930Mr. Bart Van Roekel, who has been ailing the last months was taken suddenly ill last Thursday. His condition grew worse rapidly and on Saturday night passed away at the age of 79 years.
Mr. Van Roekel was born in the Netherlands, November 9, 1851. At the age of 14 years, he came to America with two brothers and three sisters. They arrived at Pella in 1872 and came to Sioux County and bought a homestead east of Orange City.
On October 20, 1875 he was united in marriage to Miss Nellie Van Peursem and in 1881 they bought a homestead near Maurice where they helped establish the First Reformed Church. Fourteen children were born to this union of which four have died.
Those living are: John Van Roekel, Edgerton, Minnesota; Peter Van Roekel, Mrs. Sam Dykstra, Will, George, Mrs. H. Van Stryland, Mrs. Gerrit Vanden Broek, Mrs. Peter Roos, Benjamin and Ernest, all living in this vicinity. Besides the aged wife and children, he also leaves 26 grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Van Roekel left their Maurice farm about fifteen years ago and moved to Orange City. Last October they celebrated their 51th Wedding Anniversary.
Funeral services were held last Tuesday afternoon at the First Reformed Church, Reverend H. Colenbrander officiating.
