Mrs. Arie Baartman, nee Gertie Sneller, was born on September 26, 1883, near Sioux Center, Iowa. She spent her girlhood days with her parents in the Sioux County vicinity.

On August 19, 1902, she was united in holy marriage to Mr. Arie Baartman. The couple lived on farms in Iowa and Minnesota until retirement in 1936. Mr. Baartman passed away in 1952, when Mrs. Baartman moved to Boyden where she had resided until the time of her death. The deceased had been in failing health for some time. She had been confined to the Sheldon Community Hospital several times within recent weeks.

The Lord called her home at 11:00 A.M., June 7, 1959. She had reached the age of 75 years, 8 months and 12 days.

Mrs. Gertie Baartman is survived by the following children - Ed ward of Madison, South Dakota, Peter of Decatur, Michigan, William of Sioux Center, daughter, Jeanette, Mrs. Art Thomassen of Sheldon. One brother John Sneller of Sioux Center and sister Mrs. Henry Zwiers of Sioux Center; 14 grandchildren and 11 great -grand children also survive.

She was preceded in death by her husband and a daughter, Elizabeth, and four brothers and two sisters.

Services were held on Wednesday, June 10, at 1:00 P.M. at the home and at 1:30 at the First Reformed Church with Reverend Henry Schoon in charge. Burial took place in the family plot in the Middleburg Cemetery at Middleburg, Iowa.

Casket bearers were six nephews: Martin J. Sneller, Ed P. Baartman, Ed H. Sneller and Gerrit H. Sneller. Norman and Larry Moret sang “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” and the congregation sang a Dutch Psalm, Psalm 3, Verse 3.

Gertie Baartman was a faithful member of the First Reformed Church and the Ladies Aid Society when her health permitted her to go.

Relatives and friends attending the funeral were from Michigan, Louisiana, Minnesota and Iowa.
