RESEARCH NOTES

A brief note on her funeral in De Volksvriend, February 20, 1936, Rock Valley news, says she was the grandmother of Harold Long.

Her death certificate has her as Amanda Maud Long [indexed in Ancestry.com as Awanda], widowed (husband’s name not given); born September 15, 1852 in Pendleton, Ontario, Canada; father Henry Bradley, mother’s name not known to the informant (Ira Long); died at 7:30 p.m. February 8, 1936; cause, chronic myocarditis, duration several months.

The 1910 U.S. census for Sanborn, O’Brien County, Iowa has Long (or Longs), Jonathan (age 65), born in Wisconsin, a photographer, married 40 years; wife Amanda M. (age 56), born in Canada, parents born in England, mother of 3 children, 3 living; and son Ira J. (age 34), born in Wisconsin, an odd jobs laborer. Jonathan (77) and Amanda (67) are still living in Sanborn in 1920; he is retired; her immigration year appears to be 1879; she was naturalized in 1887.

In the 1930 census, an Amanda Long, apparently the same person although her age is given as 65, is living in Sanborn as a lodger and housekeeper for 75-year-old widower Israel Hakeman. She was born in Canada, her father in Northern Ireland, and her mother in England; immigrated in 1880, naturalized. Her age at first marriage is given as 13.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has Long, Amanda, b. 1851, d. 1933, Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley IA. This is confirmed on FindaGrave.com, with a photo of her headstone and no additional information. See the separately posted obituary for “Long, Amanda (Mrs. Jonathan) 1851-1933” for additional family details. This Amanda Long appears to be the same person as in the above obituary, but no explanation was found for the discrepancies in birth/death dates and other data.
