Froom the Rock Valley Star (Luverne, Minn.), December 20, 1935:

OBITUARY – Charles Hunt

Funeral services were held Friday for Charles Hunt, of Magnolia, who died at his home the preceding Tuesday after an illness of eight days. The services were held at the Hunt home in Magnolia, Rev. N. L. Haney of Luverne officiating. Pall-bearers were John Brown, P. J. Hansen, Albert Turner, Manual Cross, Alfred Turner and John Norberg. Interment was made in Maplewood cemetery at Luverne.

Charles Hunt was born October 8, 1858, in Eden, Erie county, N.Y. and lived there for 26 years. In 1884 he came west and settled in Sioux county, Iowa. He married Sophia M. Yeager February 7, 1880 and the couple made their home in Hull, Iowa until 1914 when they moved to Nobles county, Minn. Mr. Hunt engaged in farming here for five years and then moved to Magnolia where he had made his home for the past 16 years.

He is survived by his widow, one daughter, Mrs. L. L. Wunder, of Magnolia, a stepson, A. G. Yeager of Boyd, Minn., five grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. M. Doyle, of New York City.

Those from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Kirk Sheldon, and Mrs. Hyman, of Hull, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Scwaltz, of Ellsworth, and Mrs. Ole Hansen, of Sioux Falls, S.D.

[A brief note on his death in the December 13 Star gives his son’s name as Arthur.]

Minnesota death certificate #1935-MN-013562 gives his birth date as October 9, 1858 in Eden, N.Y.; parents Levi Hunt and Synthia Woods, both born in Eden; wife Sophia M. Hunt; resident of Magnolia 6 years [i.e., 16 years?]; informant, Mrs. Wunder [his daughter]; died at 6 p.m. December 10, 1935; cause, cerebral apoplexy, duration 8 days; contributory cause, hypertension, duration several years.

Family tree information on Ancestry.com has him as Charles W. Hunt, born 10 August 1860 in Eden Center, New York; parents Levi Hunt and Cynthia Wood; married Sophia Maria Wilkins (1861-1940) on 2 July 1889; a resident of Lincoln Township, Sioux County in the 1900 and 1910 censuses, and of Magnolia, Minnesota in the 1920 and 1930 censuses.

The 1900 census shows him age 40, born in November 1859 in New York, a farmer; wife Sophia, age 39, born February 1861 in Germany, immigrated in 1868; daughter Lena, born Sept. 1893 in Iowa.
The 1920 census says Sophia was born in Schleswig, Germany, immigrated 1868, naturalized 1874.
In the 1930 census his wife’s name is given as Esther, age 64 or 69, born in Germany, immigrated in 1872, naturalized; he is apparently retired (occupation: none). Their daughter Lena L. Wunder (married but no husband listed) and granddaughter Carol H. Wunder live with them.

[No explanation was found for the discrepancy in Sophia’s surname prior to her marriage (Yeager vs. Wilkins), or for the name Esther given as his wife in the 1930 census. However, the Minnesota death records index entry for Arthur G. Yeager gives “Related Name” – presumably his mother’s birth name – as Wilkins.]
