Clarice Helen Schmit, age 82, of Remsen, IA passed away Sunday, Dec. 29, 2019 at Orange City Area Health System in Orange City, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3, 2020 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen, with Father William McCarthy officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Remsen. Visitation with family present will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday. There will be a parish rosary and a vigil prayer service at 5 p.m. all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen. Visitation will resume 9:30 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Clarice was born March 2, 1937 to Henry and Mary (Wildschutz) Ricke in Granville, IA. She was raised on a farm south of Granville. She attended St. Joseph Catholic School, graduating in 1955.

On June 3, 1958 she married Cyril Schmit at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville. The couple made their home in Hospers, IA. In 1972 they moved to Remsen when they started their own construction business, and Clarice took care of the accounting and bookwork.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Church guild and Catholic Daughter of America. She enjoyed flower gardening and cooking, especially her chocolate chip cookies.

Survivors include her husband Cyril of Remsen; her five children, Doug (Elaine) Schmit of Lewisburg, PA, Terry (Melissa) Schmit of Cashion, OK, Linda Schmit and her significant other Mike Behrend of Overland Park, KS, Steve (Kim) Schmit of San Antonio, TX and Tim (Laura) Schmit of San Antonio, TX; 20 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 4 sisters-in-law, Jeanette Ricke of Remsen, Leona Ricke of Sheldon, IA, Jerry Den Hartog, Bea Schmit both of Hospers, IA, Lucy DeRoos of Algona, IA; one brother-in-law, Sylvester Schmit of Hospers, IA.

She was preceded in death by, her parents, her siblings, Omar (Leona) Ricke, Robert (Kathleen) Ricke, Clarence Ricke, Vernon Ricke, Helen (Ferd) Plathe, Kathleen (Jim) Klein, her .in-laws, Neal Den Hartog, George Kersten, Dewain DeRoos, Oscar (Bernice) Block, Harold Schmit and Germaine Schmit.

Casket bearers will be grandsons; Brett, Bryce, Joshua, Stephen, Michael and Abe Schmit.
