Gerrit Van Grootheest, Sr., who passed away at his home here after an extended illness, on May 12, was born on May 10, 1857, at Ede, province of Gelderland, Netherlands. He married Miss Teunisje Stomphorst there on November 17, 1894. He was one of five children and was the last member of the family to pass on.

Twenty years ago the family, except one daughter who still lives at Ede, Gelderland, came to America and located at Rock Valley. The eight children who came with their parents are now respected citizens and live mostly in this immediate territory.

Besides the widow, he is survived by nine children, as follows: Mrs. Elizabeth (Mrs. John Vlastuin), Doon; Gertrude (Mrs. John Van Holland),Ede, Gelderlands, Netherlands; Henry, Fairview, South Dakota; Hendrika (Mrs. Walter Niemeyer), Doon; Maas, John, Effie (Mrs. John Vander Stroet), John, and Rika (Mrs. Tom Vanden Top), Rock Valley; Mrs. Van Holland still resides at Ede, The Netherlands.

Funeral services for the respected citizen of this community were held Friday afternoon at the Netherlands Reformed Church and were conducted by the elders, Mr. Bloom at the residence; Mr. Van Surksum at the Church and Mr. De Bruin at the cemetery. Burial was at the old part of Valley View Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dirk Rozeboom, Gerrit Bakker, Fred Grevengoed, E. Driessen, John De Boer and Albertus Veldhuizen.
