From the Alton Democrat, February 7, 1920:

Mrs. H. E. Collins died at her home in Alton at 10:55 P.M. Thursday, Jan. 29th. Her death was due to pneumonia following influenza, with which she had been ill for a week. Mrs. Collins was 29 years of age and leaves a husband and three young children. She was of a bright and kindly disposition and had endeared herself to friends and neighbors, who sympathize deeply with the bereaved family.

Mrs. Collins was born at Matlock, Iowa, on October 18, 1892. She was the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Sheets. On November 21st, 1910, she was married to H. E. Collins at George, Iowa, where her parents now reside. After living a few months at Hawarden the couple came to Alton, where they have resided the past nine years, Mr. Collins being connected with the operation of the Alton Creamery.

Mrs. Collins is survived by her husband and three children, Arthur age 8, Evelyn, 5, and Victor, 3; by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Sheets; and the following sisters and brothers: Cleo Hockstresser, George, Iowa; Tessa Bodum, Long Beach, Calif.; Hazel Whiteman, Sheldon, Iowa; and Isa, Myrtle and Ervis Sheets, George.

Funeral services were held at the Collins home Saturday morning at 10:00 A.M. and interment was in Evergreen cemetery at George, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Sheets came from George about ten days ago to care for Mrs. Collins and the ret of the family, all of whom knew they were suffering with influenza. Mr. Collins contracted the disease first and is still bedridden. The little girl is still very ill with the disease.

RESEARCH NOTES

The 1920 U.S. census for Alton, Iowa (taken January 7) shows Hiram Collins, age 32, born in Illinois, parents born in Germany, a buttermaker at the creamery; wife Zoe, age 30, born in Iowa, parents born in Iowa, sons Arthur (7) and Victor (3), and daughter Edwin[!?] (5).

The 1910/1911 marriage register for Lyon County shows groom Hiram E. Collins, age 23, a resident of Hawarden, occupation: creamery business, born in Germany, parents Engeloth Collins and Tracy Harms; bride Zoe Myrtle Sheets, age 21, resident of George, Iowa, born in Matlock, parents Charles Sheets and Iola Hamilton; married at George, November 21, 1910.
