Vernon Lee Nieuwenhuis, the son of William “Bill” and Geneva (Reekers) Nieuwenhuis was born on July 18, 1934 in a farmhouse in Baker Township, Iowa. He attended country school in Baker Township until the 7th grade and continued his education at Archer, graduating from Archer High School in 1952. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force. On June 25, 1956 Vernon was united in marriage to Vione Bress at the Baker Methodist Church. After their marriage the couple farmed in Baker Township as he completed his 60th harvest this fall. Along with farming, Vernon also sold seed corn. Vernon passed away on Tuesday, December 24, 2019 at his residence, reaching the age of 85 years, 5 months and 6 days.
Vernon was a member of the Archer Methodist Church where he served as a trustee. He also served as a 4-H leader and on the O’Brien County Extension Board. He enjoyed farming, woodworking and painting.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of over 63 years, Vione; children and their spouses, Barry and Linda Nieuwenhuis of Hospers, Kelly and Luanne Nieuwenhuis of Primghar, Jim and Judy Nieuwenhuis of Hospers, Lori and Kevin Tesch of Paullina and Jerry and Jen Nieuwenhuis of Primghar; 17 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild; sister, Norene Elsbecker; sister and brother-in-laws, Janey & Jerry Westra and LaDone &Darrel Schnurr; also nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, sister, LaVerna Stinnett and brothers-in-laws, Donald Stinnett and Dick Elsbecker; sisters and brother-in-laws, Doris & Merle Harper, Ardis & Dick Uittenbogaard, Kenneth & Evelyn Bress and Bev & Orville Wiersma; nieces, Elma Stinnett and Pamela (Westra) Hillyer and nephew, Robert DeBoom.
