Lylamae was born to Floyd and Nelvia (Kosters) Vande Griend on May 27, 1935, in Hull, Iowa. She attended Hull Christian Grade School and went on to graduate from Western Christian High School in Hull. On October 8, 1954, Lyla married Donald Boer in Hull, Iowa. Early in their marriage, Don was called to serve our country in the United States Army. Don and Lyla were first in Fort Benning, Georgia, and then stationed in Wurzburg, Germany. After returning home from the service, they made their home in Ritter, Iowa. They later moved to Boyden, Iowa, and raised their family there until 2001. They then moved to Hull, and in December of 2017, they made their home in Aspen Heights in Hull, Iowa.

While their family was growing, Lyla was a stay-at-home mom. Later, she became a CNA and worked at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City, Iowa. She enjoyed working with the elderly there, and she later volunteered many hours at various organizations in and around Hull. Lyla loved to sew, cook, and bake, and she was good at it! There was nothing better than Sunday dinners at Grandpa and Grandma Boer’s house. Another special memory that grandchildren will tell you about is when Grandpa and Grandma took 2 or 3 grandchildren at a time on a trip and gave them memories that would last a lifetime. Grandpa and Grandma loved going to their grandchildren’s various activities; they are their biggest supporters.

Grateful to have been a part of her life is her husband of 65 years, Don Boer, and their four children: Debbie (Jim) Bleeker, Pam (David) Sheffield, Darwin (Emily) Boer, and Jerry (Lavonne) Boer; 15 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren, and 2 more great grandchildren to be born in 2020. Lyla is also survived by 2 sisters, Myrna Koning and Veralyn (Mert) Plender, and many nieces and nephews.

Lyla was preceded in death by her parents; a great grandson, Cash David Sheffield; a sister and her husband, Pete & Joyce Mesman, a brother and his wife, Jerace & Clarice Vande Griend; and a brother-in-law, Henry Koning.
