Mrs. H. Van Zandbergen, nee Susan Vander Pol, passed on at her home in Alton Wednesday morning, after an illness of over a year. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at one o’clock in the home and 1:30 in the Reformed church.

Born at Achlum, Netherlands, on August 9, 1859, she was 76 years, 4 months and 8 days of age at the time of her death. On May 27, 1885, she was married to Mr. Van Zandbergen and on April 27, 1888, the family left for the United States, arriving in Alton on May 12th of the same year. For seven years they resided in Alton, then farmed for twenty-five years. Sixteen years ago they retired and bought a home in Alton where they have since lived.

Of their nine children, the second, Otto, died on the boat coming from Holland and was buried in New York. Children surviving are Edward Van Zandbergen of Hospers; Bertha, Mrs. Martin Dykstra, Alton; Otto of Sheldon; John of Alton; Nick of Grand Rapids, Mich.; Arie of Orange City; Gertrude, Mrs. John B. Hyink, of Hospers; Clara, Mrs. Gerrit Scholten of Alton. There are seventeen grandchildren and one great grandchild; also two brothers surviving, Oscar Vander Pol of Sheldon and Douwe Vander Pol of Hospers.

Nick Van Zandbergen of Grand Rapids arrived Wednesday having been notified the previous day of his mother’s serious condition.

Last May Mr. and Mrs. Van Zandbergen held open house on the occasion of their golden wedding anniversary. Although far from well at the time Mrs. Van Zandbergen was able to be up and visit with her family and many friends.

Devoted to her family, church and friends, Mrs. Van Zandbergen was a notable example of fine Christian motherhood and her memory will long be cherished by a host of friends.
