Kathy Marie Lang Petersen, age 65, of Sioux Falls formerly of Alton, IA passed away Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls surrounded by her loving family.

Graveside Services will begin at 1:00 pm at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Kimballton, Iowa on Tuesday, November 19, 2019.

Kathy was born on March 28, 1954 to John F. and Mary Lou (Schmidt) Lang in Atlantic, Iowa. She was raised alongside her brother Richard and sister Ann, and graduated with the Atlantic High School Class of 1972.

Kathy entered into marriage with Arlo D. “Pete” Petersen on June 24, 1972. They made their first home in rural Lindsborg, Kansas, but their path led them to many places. They lived in both Kansas and Iowa, and a short time in Chicago. They also spent a memorable year in Bergton, Virginia, and most recently, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Kathy faithfully embraced her husband’s endeavors throughout his education, teaching and ministry. She was extremely proud and supportive of him wherever their journey led them. Kathy and Pete were blessed with two daughters, Shaunna and Jabrel. Kathy was an affectionate and loving mother, and always put her family first. Kathy was proudest of her nine grandchildren, and they became the light of her life. She enjoyed playing the piano, sewing, counted cross-stitch, antiques, cooking, canning and baking. Her favorite thing to do was to spend time with her family.

Alongside Pete as a minister’s wife, in each community they lived in, Kathy embraced many roles. When her girls were young, she provided childcare in their home. Many of these children remained in contact with Kathy over the years. She was instrumental in implementing the first computers in the Development Office at Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. Kathy also worked in the Corporate Headquarters of Diamond Vogel Paint in Orange City, Iowa in office and computer operations for close to 23 years until her journey with ovarian cancer began four years ago. Kathy gave from her heart and treasured each relationship in her life. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend.

Kathy will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 47 years, Pete Petersen, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and their children, Shaunna (Ryan) Halvorson of Humboldt, Iowa, and Jabrel (Drew) Klinkebiel of Sioux Falls, grandchildren Hannah, John, Elise, Jacob and Samuel Halvorson of Humboldt, and Ayden and Chayley Dykstra, and Maizey and Lainey Klinkebiel of Sioux Falls, brother Richard (Roberta) Lang of Austin, Texas, and sister Ann (Greg) Lear of Spencer, Iowa, sister-in-law Carol (Al) Petersen of Elk Horn, Iowa, and sister-in-law Benita (Ron) Drake of Menlo, Iowa. Many nieces and nephews brought her much joy. She held formative relationships with her cousins throughout her entire life and considered them her closest friends.

Preceding her in death and there to welcome her into heaven are her parents John F. and Mary Lou Lang, her father and mother-in-law Charles and Virginia Kolb, her grandparents, many special aunts and uncles, and several cousins, including Karen Lang, who was extra dear to her heart

Kathy’s family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude for the prayers and support offered to Kathy and her family throughout her illness. We are all grateful for the support received from the communities in which we live. The gift that Kathy gave to each of us-the gift of herself- and the lessons she has taught us along her journey, will bring each of us comfort. Thank you for celebrating her life with us!

Memorial Contributions can be made in Kathy’s honor to Ovarian Cancer Research at https://ocrahope.org or St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.
