John Vander Maten Former Resident Alton, Passes On

John Vander Maten, ill for years with many heart trouble and confined to his home the greater part of the time, had improved so much that he could take walks outside.

Friday afternoon he went the city hall to view the antique display and while there suffered a heart attack, with death the result.

Born April 3, 1867, in the Netherlands, Mr. Vander Maten came to this country in 1885, settling on a farm near Alton.

In 1891 he married Miss Allie Hoeve, and the young couple moved to a farm 4 miles south of Boyden where they were blessed with 9 children, of whom are still alive: Herman and Andrew, Sheldon ; Lucy, Mrs. Henry Van't Hof, Orange City: John, Edgerton, Minn.; Gertrude, Mrs. Arie Van Kley, Ashton ; Alice, Mrs. Marion Van Peursem, Boyden, and Jacob of Orange City.

There are 33 grandchildren; 3 brothers aud 2 sisters, Bert and Frank of Sheldon, Gerrit, Boyden, Jennie, Mrs. Ben Koerselman, George; and Stella, Mrs, John Vander Laan, Orange City, with the widow and the children, and also many friends regretting the passing of a beloved husband, father and friend.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 23, at 1:30 P.M. in the First Reformed Church with Reverend H. Colenbrander officiating, assisted by Reverend F.B. Mansen of Middleburg.
