Mrs. John Vander Maten, Sr. Dies Early Sunday Death Follows Stroke; Rites Held Wednesday

Funeral rites for Mrs. John Vander Maten, Sr. were held Wednesday afternoon, April 23, at the First Reformed Church, of which she was a member.

Reverend Henry Colenbrander officiated, and arrangements were in charge of Van Etten Funeral Home. The pallbearars were all grandsons of the deceased.

Mrs. Allie "Aaltje" (Hoeve) Vander Maten died early Sunday morning, April 25, at 85 years of age following a stroke suffered 36 hours previously.

She was born in the Netherlands on November 15, 1868, the daughter of Dries and Geertje (Visch) Hoeve and came to this country in 1881. Soon after the family's arrival in this country, they came on to Sioux County.

She was married to John Vander Maten on January 22, 1891. To this union nine children were born; a daughter, Gertie died in infancy and a son, William died in 1930. The Vander Maten's moved to Orange City in 1930. Mr. Vander Maten preceded his wife in death in 1939.

The surviving children are Herman of Sheldon; Andrew of Hospers; Lucy (Mrs. Henry Van't Hof), Orange City; John, Edgerton Minnesota; Gert (Mrs. Van Kley) Sheldon; Alice, (Mrs. Marion Van Peursem), Orange City; and Jacob of Fort Dodge. Burial was made at the Orange City Cemetery.
