Find a Grave lists John Schafer born 10 Oct 1857 New York died 9 Mar 1933 Spirit Lake IA buried in Sheridan Township cemetery Boyden IA. Wife Martha Jane Schafer, the children lists were Eula Belle Verdoorn and Harold Schafer

The death record indicates he was born Oct 10, 1857 died Mar 8, 1932 at Spirit Lake IA. His mother was Catherine Hoffman born in Germany, his father was Conrad Schafer born in Germany. His wife was Martha Jane Schafer, he died of several old age related illnesses.

John Schafer passed away at his home east of Spirit Lake Tuesday March 8th at 4:30 p.m., following a stroke Sunday morning.

He was born in new York October 10th 1857 and died at the age of 74 years, 5 months and 8 days. He was the youngest of eight children, four sisters and three brothers, one sister and one brother surviving him. At the age of three weeks he came to Muscatine IA.

When he was twelve years old he moved to Poweshiek county, later making his home in Carroll county, until 1883, when he moved to Boyden Iowa. He spent 36 years in Sioux County, going through all the hardships of a pioneer life.

February 19th 1884 he was married to Miss Martha Horn of Poweshiek county. They were married in Montezuma, Iowa, going directly to their home in Sioux County. In the fall of 1920 he moved to his home east Spirit Lake.

He was confirmed and became a member of the German Lutheran church at the age of 14 years.

He leaves to mourn his untimely death his wife Martha Schafer , one son Harold of Orange City, one daughter Mrs. J. Ver Doorn of Marshall MN and four grandchildren one sister Mrs. Lizzie Anderson of Grinnell, Iowa and one brother Conrad Schafer of Colo, Iowa and a great many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of neighbors, and friends.

He was a kind loving husband and father, kind neighbor and good to all that came in contact with him.

Those from away who attended the funeral service at Boyden were: Mr. Jake Ver Doorn and Miss Marie VerDoorn, of Marshall MN, and Mrs. Walter Schafer of Canova SD, Mrs. Mary Dewlerd of Plankington SD, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Carne of Hurley SD, Mr. C. Sharp and Mr. and Mrs. Earnest Sharp of Spirit Lake IA, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Horn and daughters of Hull, and Mr. and Mrs. Jake Den Hartog and daughters and Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Lubbers of Sheldon IA.
