Funeral services held September 4 for John Vander Laan

Funeral services for John Vander Laan were held on Monday, September 4 at 1:30 p.m. in the First Reformed Church of Orange City with the Reverend R. Van Heukelom officiating. Burial was made in the Westlawn Cemetery under the direction of the Van Etten Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were six grandsons, Louis Vander Laan Jr., Leon Vander Laan, Roger Ten Napel, Harlan Ten Napel, Darrelll Bertsch, and Phillip Vander Laan.

John Vander Laan, 81 years of age, died Friday, September 1 in the Orange City hospital following a coronary attack.

He was born October 28, 1885 in the Netherlands and at four years of age came to Orange City with his mother and family. He attended Orange City High School and taught school for several years.

On February 7, 1912, he was married to Stella Vander Maaten and farmed in the Boyden and Maurice vicinities for about 26 years before moving to a small acreage outside Orange City.

Since 1963 he resided at 519 Boston N. E. and the last 6 weeks at the Pleasant Acres Nursing Home in Hull.

He was preceded in death by his wife, a son Herman and an infant grandson. Survivors are Louis of Beresford, South Dakota, Lorena (Mrs. Marion Ten Napel) of Jasper, Minnesota, Marion, Clarence, and Harold all of Orange City, 16 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
