Bernard August Wilhelm Saeger was born on November 9, 1891 to Mr. and Mrs. Julius Saeger of Hull, IA.. He was the youngest in the family of twelve Children, all of whom, except one sister have preceded him in death. He attended the public school at Hull and also two years of German school there, then he studied for two years at Concordia College in St. Paul, MN. Following this he went to Canada and worked in a department store in Winnipeg. In 1915, he returned to Hull and married Maybelle Clara Saeger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Thomas Mackie, later the year.
In 1919 their only daughter, Lavone June was born. The family lived in Hull until 1924, when they moved to Alvord, where he began operating a café. He was in business here until his death.
He took part in Christ Lutheran Church Brotherhood activities, Alvord Commercial Club and other civic Functions. In his youth he was a much sought baseball player in competition among the towns in Northwest Iowa. While he was in Canada, the YMCA awarded him an engraved ring for his athletic skills.
