DEATH OF MRS. E. W. KOENEN

Mrs. E. W. Koenen passed away at her home northwest of Rock Valley last Thursday afternoon, May 16, aged sixty-five years and eleven months. She was born in the Netherlands June 20, 1869, where she grew to womanhood.

Mrs. Koenen was the mother of four children, Lambertus, of Larchwood; Dick and Albertha, of Rock Valley vicinity; and Mrs. Arthur Asche, of Rock Rapids. She also leaves three sisters, one living at Twin Falls, Idaho, and two living in the Netherlands, and two grand children.

Funeral services were held in the Old Reformed church in Rock Valley Monday afternoon and the remains were taken to the Valley View Cemetery.

Her death certificate has Mrs. Maria Koenen, wife of Elbertus W. Koenen; born June 20, 1869 in the Netherlands; parents Dick Beek and Getrug Vander Weide; resident of the U.S. 25 years and of Rock Valley 12 years; died at 3:45 p.m. May 16, 1935; cause, secondary carcinoma of the lungs, onset several months ago; contributory cause, carcinoma of left breast, onset about 2 years ago.

The Netherlands Birth Index on WieWasWie.nl has an entry that is probably her: Maria Beek, born 20 July 1869 in Ede, Gelderland, parents Derk Beek, a laborer, and Geertrui van der Weiden. There is also a marriage index record: groom Elbertus Wilhelmus Koenen, age 29, born in Amersfoort, parents Lambertus Koenen and Elberta Wilhelmina de Bree; bride Maria Beek, age 34, born in Ede, parents Derk Beek and Geertrui van der Weiden; married in Amersfoort 30 Sept. 1903.

The 1930 U.S. census shows the Koenen family having immigrated to the U.S. in 1910; he is a farmer; all are aliens; the children (Bertha, 25, Dick, 23, and Bert, 20) speak English but the parents do not.
