Mrs. William Vander Hamm, (Francine Van Citters) was born at a Zeeland Province, Kloetingen, The Netherlands, November 21, 1884. She was one of nine children of Casper A.J. and Francine (Van Sluijs) Van Citters. One of her brothers, Joe, preceded her in death in 1932.

She came to the United States in 1887 at the age of 3 years. Save for a very short time, when she lived in Minnesota, she lived in Sioux County from 1887 till the time of her death.

June 16, 1904 she was united in marriage to Andrew Vander Stoep of Orange City. They settled on his father’s farm 2 ½ miles west of Orange City. Later on they moved to a farm at Hospers where they lived for a few years. They returned to their first place west of Orange City until 1925 when she and her children moved to Orange City.

To this union six children were born, Frank at Downey, California; Helen, Mrs. Joe Wilcox, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Pearl, Mrs. Jack Smith of Whittler, California; Roy of Orange City; Dorothy, Mrs. Dick De Bey at Los Angeles, California and Charles still at home.

January 18, 1935 she was married to William Vander Hamm. After an illness of only a few days she died September 12, 1941 due to an encephalitis and a stroke. She was 56 years old.

Mrs. Vander Hamm was active in church work. She served as assistant treasurer of the Ladies Mission and Aid Society. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary which she served as secretary.

All the children were home for the funeral held Monday in the American Reformed Church with Reverend Mr. L. Nattress officiating. The funeral party was detained in the church for over one hour during heavy rain storm before they could proceed to the Orange City Cemetery where burial was made.

She is survived by her husband, three sons and three daughters and seven grandchildren, her aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.A.J. Van Citters; five brothers, Cornelius at Sibley; William at Glendale, California; Charles at Orange City; Aernout (Ollie) at Orange City and Adolph (Bud) at Eagle Grove. Also two sisters, Marguerite, Mrs. A. Van Pelt of Orange City and Cornelia who is at home, and a host of friends, for she was loved by all who knew her.
