From the Alton Democrat, April 5, 1935:

Fred Ricker of Hope N.D., Gone

Frederick William Ricker, a well known Sioux county citizen for many years, died suddenly the morning of March 22, at his home at Hope, North Dakota, where the family has lived since 1917. Mr. Ricker always maintained his interest in Sioux county affairs, however, having been a subscriber for The Democrat during the past 42 years. News of his death comes as a shock to a host of Sioux county friends.

Mr. Ricker opened the first store at Granville and for a time the town bore his name until a postoffice was established there. The following splendid account of his life is from the Hope (N.D.) Pioneer:

Frederick William Ricker, whose death occurred suddenly Friday morning, March 22, had attained the age of 76 years, six months, and 18 days. He had been in poor health for several years.

Mr. Ricker was born at Bellevue, Iowa, on September 5, 1858, and spent his youthful years there. In 1881, while northwestern Iowa was still a prairie, he went to Granville and opened a store. At this time a postoffice had not been established and for a time the town bore his name. In 1891 he moved to Hospers, Ia., and on September 10, 1894, was united in marriage with Ida Langenhorst. To this union three children were born. He resided there for 17 years and then returned to Granville.

In 1917 he came to North Dakota with his family and located six miles north of Hope, in Sherbrooke township, and has resided there since.

He leaves to mourn his demise, his beloved wife, two sons, Earle and Archie, of this vicinity, and one daughter, Mrs. Genevieve Graff of Granville, Iowa; six grandchildren; two brothers, Henry and Joseph, of Granville, Iowa, and one sister, Mrs. John Ernst of Marcus, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Monday in St. Agatha’s Catholic church in Hope with the Rev. L. Widman officiating. Interment was made in the church cemetery.

Relatives and friends from a distance attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Jos. H. Graff and family, Granville, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. John Jungers, Hospers, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Caseman, Long Prairie, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Heying, Ideal, S.D.; Mrs. John Claseman and George Claseman, Long Prairie, Minn.

FindaGrave.com gives his parents as Ignatius Nicholas Ricker (1825-1911) and Annie Angela Kueter Ricker (1828-1864); lists several siblings; wife Ida Langenhorst Ricker (1871-1947).

The 1920 and 1930 censuses for Sherbrooke Township show him to be a farmer there. In 1930 his son Earle is farming with him.
