Pioneer Gone
Andrew A. Roos, one of the early pioneers of this county, passed away at his home in Sioux Center, Saturday, August 26th, his death resulting from cancer of the stomach, from which he had suffered acutely since last January. He was 75 years three months and one day old at the time of his passing.
Mr. Roos was well known by early residents of the county and was an outstanding farmer and citizen of his generation. Born in the Netherlands at TerSchelling, he came to this country when a lad of 13 years. The family settled first in Illinois but five years later moved to Ackley, IA. He was married 51 years ago to Miss Alice Schaap, and came with his family to Sioux County nine years later taking up a homestead four miles west of Orange City, where the family lived for 24 years. They lived 11 years at Hull and 7 years at Rock Rapids and in January 1926 went in Sioux Center to make their home.

Mrs. Roos survives her husband, with six children namely Mrs. John Beernink of Sioux Center: Mrs. R. Bos of Hull; Mrs. Richard Vermeer of Sioux Center; Neal Roos of Denver; Miss Minnie Roos and John Roos at home; and 16 grandchildren. Three sons and on daughter passed away during the diphtheria epidemic in 1895. One brother also survives, Arend Roos of Holland MI, formerly a harness maker in Sioux Center. Mrs. Roos was not able to come to the funeral but his children, Cornie and Janet were expected as were a number of North Dakota relatives.

Services were held Wednesday afternoon, August 24th, at the home and at two o’clock at the First Reformed church in Sioux Center. Rev. Lubbers the pastor, preached in Dutch and Rev. De Jong of Rock Rapids in the English language. This fine old pioneer will be missed not only by his family but by hundreds of friends.
