From the Alton Democrat, April 7, 1900:

Word reached Alton on Tuesday from Adrian, Minnesota, of the death in that city of Mrs. Wm. Bauer, who was quite well known here several years ago as Miss Handel, whose parents moved here from Caledonia, Minnesota, some seven or eight years ago. Mr. Bauer is a relative of John and Matt Bauer of near Remsen and Pete Kellen of Granville. The two last named gentlemen accompanied by Mrs. John Bauer left Tuesday to attend the funeral.

From the Adrian Guardian, April 6, 1900:

AT REST
Mrs. W. J. Bauer Dies at Her Home in This City

Monday afternoon the soul of Mrs. W. J. Bauer, wife of W. J. Bauer took flight to “The Valley of the Shadow,” after a week’s sickness with pneumonia. This is indeed a sad death. A happy home, surrounded by a light which makes the world worth living in, is suddenly darkened by the Messenger of Death, whose actions cannot be accounted for, and who strikes when least expected.

Margaret Hendle was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Hendle, of Lismore township, and was born in Germany, March 28, 1869. She came to this country a short time after, with her parents, and was a resident of Caledonia, this state, for 19 years. The family then moved to Alton, Iowa, where they remained for two years, coming here in 1890, where they engaged in the hotel business, and where Margaret became known as one of those girls whom it is a pleasure to meet.

She married W. J. Bauer on November 26, 1891, and six children have been born to bless the bond. She leaves, besides these children, a husband, father, mother, several brothers and sisters and hosts of friends who will miss her from the walks of life.

Mrs. Bauer was a woman who devoted herself to all that was good, always striving to make people happy by kind words and actions, and her death is not only a severe loss to the sorrowing family, but to the many neighbors and friends.

The funeral was held from St. Adrian’s church yesterday, the remains being interred in the Catholic cemetery. The Forresters, of which Mr. Bauer is a member, were out in full force, and a very large number of earnest friends followed the remains to the place of interment, where the body will remain in dreamless sleep. Peace to the ashes.
