Magdalene Vanden Berg, 84, of Hospers, Iowa, died Monday, October 19, 1998 at the Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon, Iowa.

Memorial services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 23, at the Hospers Christian Reformed Church with the Reverend Duane Tinklenberg officiating. Burial was held in the Hospers Cemetery prior to the service under the direction of the Vander Ploeg Chapel of Hospers.

Magdalene Vanden Berg was born August 14, 1914 at rural Hospers, Iowa. She was the daughter of Dick and Jacoba (De Bruyn) Vanden Berg. She was educated in a country school and in 1940 she and her parents moved into Hopsers.

Magdalene worked for the Hospers Telephone Company for 30 years, retiring at the age of 70 in 1984. In August of 1998 she became a resident of the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon.

Magdalene was a lifelong member of the First Christian Reformed Church of Hospers. She was a member of the Golden Hour Society and the Priscilla Society for many years. She also helped begin the library in her church. Magdalene worked for many years as a volunteer for the Hospers Christian School's S.O.S. program.

Magdalene enjoyed flowers, needlework, reading and traveling.

Magdalene will be lovingly remembered by her brother Case Vanden Berg of Sioux Center, sister Nellie De Haas of Sheldon, and sister-in-law Emma Vanden Berg of Sioux Center. Nieces and nephews include: Stan and Beth Vanden Berg, Dennis and Jan Vanden Berg, Marlys and Jay Driesen, Shirley and Jim Grooters, Ken and Joan Vander Hoeven, Karen Vander Hoeven and Doug Vanden Berg. There are 23 great-nieces and nephews and six great-grand nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sister Greta and her husband Lane Vander Hoeven, brother Jack Vanden Berg, brother-in-law Nick De Haas, sister-in-law Nellie Vanden Berg, nephews Leonard Vander Hoeven and niece Joan Vander Hoeven.
