Funeral services for Ellis A. Wood, 72, prominent Hawarden business man who died Monday night at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Sioux City where he had been a patient the past few weeks, will be held at two o’clock this afternoon (Thursday) at the Associated Church, Reverend William Sebring will officiate with burial in Grace Hill Cemetery under the direction of the Bernard Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hal Shoemaker, the organist, will accompany Mr. Shoemaker as he sings “Rock of Ages” and “The Lord’s Prayer.”

Casket bearers will be Dr. R.E. Ashmore, Ray Nan Buskirk, Charles McManaman, Ray Rummel, Charles Sedwick and Glean Olsen. Honorary pallbearers will be Irvin Tilgner, Harry Dawson, Chester Schoeneman, Clayton Thompson, Clarence Gamble, Henry Visser, Melvin Evenhuis, Earl Slife, Sr., Clarence Rush and Robert Gebble.

Mr. Wood was born at Avoca, New York, September 26, 1891, to Ben and Cora Wood. With his parents he moved to Ireton while still an infant and later to Hawarden.

In 1919 he graduated from high school and the same year moved with his parent to Sioux City. He married LaVon Richards of Hawarden January 3, 1914, and they located in Heela, South Dakota, where he operated a clothing store in partnership with Carl Meeter. In 1918 they moved to Hawarden where he engaged in the electrical and plumbing business for several years. For the past 30 years he had been engaged in the real estate and insurance business.

Mr. Wood was a member of the Associated Church, the Rotary Club and Fraternal Order of Eagles. A golf enthusiast, he had been awarded a variety of trophies.

For 40 years Mr. Wood served on the Hawarden volunteer fire department. He served as chairman of the Sioux County Board of Review the past 18 years. He worked in the capacity of city assessor from 1932 through 1948. Mr. and Mrs. Wood observed their Golden Wedding Anniversary in January of 1964.

He is survived by the widow; three sons, Jerry and George of Hawarden and Warren of Naperville, Illinois; two daughters, Mrs. Dean (Margaret) Lichty of Carleton, Nebraska and Mrs. Dick (Gwen) Gant of Minneapolis; two brothers, Harley E. Wood of Columbus, Ohio, and Elliot M. Wood of Orange, California; a sister, Mrs. Mildred Naughton of Sioux City, and 14 grandchildren.
