Dr. William A. "Bill" Herzog, Jr., retired Northwestern College faculty member, died on January 18 at the home of his daughter in Monroe, New York. He was 90 years old.
A memorial service was held on January 26 in Monroe, New York.

In accordance with his wishes, his body was cremated.

A New York native, he was born near Watertown to Rev. William and Dora Herzog.
His formative years were spent in Three Mile Bay, New York.

Upon graduating high school in 1945, he was inducted into the US Army and served with the Army of Occupation in Germany.

Honorably discharged in 1947, he enrolled in Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, where he earned a B.A. in biblical literature.

In 1952 he joined the Latin America Mission in San Jose, Costa Rica. He was a pianist for Mission's evangelistic crusades throughout Central and South America. He was assigned to the Mission's radio station and bookstore in Panama City, Panama.

In 1956 he married Lois Erickson. The couple were assigned to the Mission's radio station in San Jose, Costa Rica, and later to the radio station in Panama.

Returning to the US in 1961, Bill earned a masters in communication studies at Indiana University and later a Ph. D. in the field at Michigan State University.

Between the years of 1965 and 1971 he engaged in research in Brazil. He returned to MSU to teach in the communication department and serve as associate director of the Midwest Universities Consortium for International Activities. He served as a consultant for a number of governmental and private agencies in developing countries.

In 1981 Bill moved to Orange City to join Northwestern faculty and initiate a new department of communication studies. He retired in 1999 and remained in Orange City until 2014.

Bill was a member of American Reformed Church where he directed the choir for a number of years. He was a member of the Sioux County Oratorio Chorus.

Besides his ongoing interests in music, media and international development, he enjoyed baseball, camping, birding, road trips, and Sudoku.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Lois; three children, five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren, as well as three siblings and several nieces and nephews.
