DEATH OF JAMES FLANNERY--MRS. HAYDEN DALTON’S FATHER PASSED AWAY LAST THURSDAY

James Flannery, a pioneer resident of Elk Point and father of Mrs. Hayden Dalton of Hawarden, passed away at 7 o’clock last Thursday evening at the home of his son, John W. Flannery in Elk Point, following a brief illness. Mr. Flannery suffered a stroke May 7th but he seemed to be making a satisfactory recovery from it and was able to be up some. Mrs. Salton was with her father last Thursday but he seemed much improved and so she returned home late that afternoon but she hardly reached here when she received a telephone call advising her that her father had passed away.

Funeral services were held at 9 o’clock Monday morning at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Elk Point, Reverend Barr of Jefferson officiating at Requiem High Mass. The Mass was sung by the Allard brothers of Jefferson. He was buried in a crypt in the mausoleum in Sioux City.

James Flannery, son of William and Mary (McGee) Flannery, was born in Illinois April 15, 1857, and passed away May 15, 1930, just one month following his 73rd birthday. He came to Union County from Illinois and for a time he engaged in farming. Later for a number of years he operated the Merchants Hotel in Elk Point, after which he conducted a grocery store at that place. A number of years ago he retired but of late he helped his son, John W. Flannery, who operates a grocery store in Elk Point, as he wished to be busy doing something. His wife, Mathilda (Donneley) Flannery preceded him in death June 2, 1925.

He is survived by three children, John W. of Elk Point and Charles D. of Sioux City and Mrs. Hayden Dalton of Hawarden.

Mr. and Mrs. John Dalton Jr., Mrs. William Clifford of Marshall, Minnesota, and Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Linnan of Maurice motored to Elk Point from here Monday morning to attend the funeral.
