From the Sioux County Index (Hull), July 13, 1934:

A. Schuurman Died Sat.; Lived Here for Many Years

A Schuurman, who had been a resident of Hull for many years, died at his home here last Saturday, July 7th.

Mr. Schuurman was born in the Netherlands, seventy eight years ago, where he spent his boyhood days. Fifty years ago he was married to Gertje Donkelar, and the family came to America in 1893. They settled in this vicinity where they have constantly resided.

Eight children were born to Mr. & Mrs. Schuurman, as follows: Henry of Montana; John of Doon, Iowa; William, Mrs. Wm. Scholten, Marinus, Gertrude, and Edward of Hull and Jennie, who died in 1911. Besides his wife and children, Mr. Schuurman is survived by twenty grandchildren and twenty four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 10th, at the home and from the First Reformed Church. Interment was in Hope Cemetery.

His death certificate has Arnold Schuurman, resident of Hull for 14 years, resident of the U.S. for 40 years; wife Gertie; occupation, retired farmer, worked 40 years in this occupation; born May 8, 1856 in Holland; parents Hiendre Kus Schuurman and Kate Hoorhuis; died at 2:15 p.m. July 7, 1934; cause, lung infection, onset April 1, 1934; contributory cause, bronchiestasis, duration years.

His FindaGrave.com page shows him born 8 May 1856 in Ede, Gelderland, Netherlands. Spouse Gerritje Van Dronkelaar Schuurman (1864-1939), married 1884. Children: John (1879-1960), Jennie Van Oort (1885-1911), John William (1887-1951), Grace Scholten (1889-1972), Marinus (1892-1965), Gertie (1895-1985), and Edward (1898-1962). An added note on the page says that his first wife was Maria Versteeg, who he married September 2, 1876 at Ede; she was born at Ede 4 November 1854 and died there 11 January 1884.
