LAST RITES FOR ANTON WEIDENFELLER AT ALTON TUESDAY

Burial services for Anton Weidenfeller of Merrill, early Alton resident, were in St. Mary’s Cemetery Tuesday in the Weidenfeller lot where two children rest.

Mr. Weidenfeller operated a saloon during the early ‘90s in the building later purchased by B. Kettler and known as the Dubuque House. The following obituary is from the Le Mars Sentinel:

Death claimed Anton Weidenfeller, 83, retired merchant, one of the early settlers in Plymouth County, at his home in Merrill, Sunday, May 24. Mr. Weidenfeller had been ailing in health the last two years.

Anton Weidenfeller was born at Coblenz, Germany, February 18, 1859 and came when twelve years old to the United States with his parents,

Anton is the son of Adam and Anna Maria (Schenkelberg) Weidenfeller. They were among the first settlers in Liberty Township. He grew up on the farm and then engaged in business and conducted saloons in Alton, Le Mars and Merrill for many years.

He was married to Mary Miller at St. Joseph’s Church in Le Mars in 1881, Reverend Father H.J. Meis officiating and with his wife celebrated his sixtieth wedding anniversary in January 1941.

He is survived by his wife, his son, John A. Weidenfeller of Merrill; a daughter, Mrs. Louis Hoffman of Brunswick, Nebraska; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A son, Edward, died in infancy and a daughter, Mrs. Maynard Eberle, preceded him in death.

Mr. Weidenfeller was widely known in Plymouth and Sioux Counties, especially among the older residents and was active in community affairs.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, May 26, at 9 o’clock in the Church of the Assumption in Merrill, with Reverend Zeno Reising, the pastor, officiating, and interment, made in the cemetery at Alton.
